Manual Lymphatic Drainage in Utica, NY
What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, specialized massage technique designed to encourage the movement of lymphatic fluid through the body. Using light, rhythmic, circular movements, I work with the body's natural lymphatic pathways to help move excess fluid away from swollen or congested areas and support its return to circulation.
Unlike traditional massage, MLD uses very light pressure. The movements follow a slow, rhythmic pattern that works with the natural rhythm of the lymphatic system, offering a gentle approach to supporting fluid movement and overall comfort.
Benefits of MLD
The lymphatic system plays an important role in fluid balance and immune function. When lymphatic fluid does not move efficiently, swelling or a feeling of heaviness may occur.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage may help support:
Swelling management: Encourages the movement of excess fluid in areas affected by swelling.
Post-surgical recovery: May help manage swelling following certain surgical procedures when appropriate and approved by your medical provider.
Lymphatic circulation: Supports the movement of lymphatic fluid through the body's lymphatic pathways.
Comfort and relaxation: The gentle, rhythmic nature of MLD can provide a calming treatment experience.
MLD is sometimes used as part of a broader plan of care for conditions involving swelling, including lymphedema. Treatment needs vary from person to person, and MLD is not a replacement for medical care or a substitute for other recommended treatments.
What to Expect During Your Session
Your comfort and well-being are important to me. We will begin by discussing your goals, relevant health history, and any areas of concern so I can help determine whether MLD is an appropriate service for you.
During the session, I will use gentle, rhythmic movements on the skin to encourage lymphatic fluid movement. The pressure is much lighter than that used in a typical relaxation massage, so you should not expect deep pressure or forceful muscle manipulation.
Every session is approached with care and attention to your individual needs.
Is MLD Right for You?
MLD may be appropriate for individuals experiencing certain types of swelling or seeking support during recovery from surgery. However, it is not suitable for everyone. Some medical conditions require clearance from a healthcare provider before treatment.
If you are recovering from surgery, have persistent or unexplained swelling, or have a diagnosed medical condition affecting your lymphatic or circulatory system, please consult your healthcare provider before scheduling. Sudden or unexplained swelling should be medically evaluated.
